In a rapidly globalizing world, where 43% of the population is bilingual and more than 20% in the United States alone, bilingual education emerges as both an opportunity and a pressing challenge. Diverse communities present a unique obstacle as teachers grapple with the impossibility of understanding all languages spoken in their classrooms. This issue is exacerbated in low- and middle-income countries, where an alarming 37% of students are required to learn in a language not native to them, significantly limiting their learning potential. The impact is clearly outlined in the World Bank's Loud and Clear report, revealing that too many children worldwide are taught in languages they don't comprehend, contributing to persistently low learning levels. This issue disproportionately affects children in the bottom 40% of the socioeconomic scale, residing in remote areas with limited family resources, leading to higher dropout rates, repetition rates, elevated learning poverty, and overall lower learning outcomes. Bilingualism, while cognitively beneficial, poses additional literacy challenges for bilingual children, particularly in reading comprehension due to a smaller English vocabulary size. Our mission is to address this multifaceted problem, empowering bilingual learners with a solution that not only acknowledges the cognitive advantages of bilingualism but also overcomes the literacy hurdles that hinder their academic success.
